Introduction to the Art of Chinese CalligraphyThis book is part of the Peking University Calligraphy Research Books series. By summarising and reflecting on the theories of Chinese calligraphy, it expands the reach of calligraphy's influence, taking it from the classroom into the rest of society, thereby transforming academic theory into a more accessible medium which can be widely accepted and understood by the public. With far reaching and innovative ideas, the text will assist the development of new concepts and exert an extensive influence over the subject for anyone wishing to increase their knowledge on the “Art of Chinese Calligraphy”.The book is divided into two sections. The six chapters in section one focus primarily on reproduction and performance; the structures of Chinese characters and the skills of using the Chinese brush; the principles of layout and space; the styles and schools of Chinese calligraphy, calligraphers and their work; and finally the creation and aesthetic standards of calligraphy. According to the author, such an introduction covers almost all the fundamental elements of calligraphy. Furthermore, calligraphy, which has been considered a form of "art", has found itself to be consistent with the well-established scientific structures of the theory of classic arts which outline the relationship between a work and three other elements - the world, artists and the viewer. All these supportive factors make it possible for this work to be ready for examination and inspection from the field of literary aesthetics.Section two, over ten chapters, presents the history and progress of calligraphic aesthetics. From Prehistoric through to modern times, it shows us the styles and aesthetic concepts of different stages throughout the development of Chinese calligraphy. The author believes that this section, which includes a brief introduction to the history of Chinese calligraphy, will provide readers with a wide ranging historical panorama of the art of Chinese calligraphy. The first edition, published in 2005 by Peking University Press, was reprinted three times during the first year. This second edition has been fully revised and expanded to include the history of calligraphy, giving further insight into the origins of this complex art form. |
